Using Social Media for Entrepreneurs and Startups

Startup companies amaze me, better said the people behind startups amaze me. I’m attracted to the entrepreneurial spirit like a moth to bright lights. There is something just sexy about the excitement and risk involved that makes this game so much fun.

When I moved to Boston I got a job at a startup and it was a wild ride, now that I’m no longer working there I’ve started doing it myself as a social media consultant. I attend young entrepreneur networking and development events each week and soak up their tales of success, failure and ingenuity. I have been meeting more and more with young entrepreneurs in coffee shops, bars and living rooms to help them figure out how they can use social media tools and enter the content game.

What I have been seeing is that each business no matter where it is in the development stage comes with a philosophy. These young entrepreneurs are very passionate and it’s because they have a mission behind their work that drives them. You ask them about the weather and in an instant they have you convinced that their product of service is going to change the world.

That’s why it blows my mind when I ask these people if they are blogging or creating content and they say “Well, I’m not really sure what to talk about”. The internet is the greatest platform in the world for disseminating information about your passion. And also it’s not just one-way! You get to hear from all those people who love your idea, can help you, want your product or have criticisms you need to hear.

Are you a young entrepreneur who wants to, build a network, get feed back, build an army, sell product, make connections, change the world, get VC funding and get credit? Of course you are! So then you need to get into the content game. Start a blog, blog everyday about what you know best for 30 days and see what happens. Keep track of twitter followers, readers, traffic, comments and leads. I’m positive that at the end of those 30 days you will have more defined goals, know your business better, have a ton of contacts, build your personal brand and become an expert in online communications.

Do you have a brilliant idea for entrepreneurs to use when getting started? Please share.

Thanks to Beepie K for the photo and @GaryVee for the inspiration.

It's a god-awful small affair
To the girl with the mousy hair
But her mummy is yelling "No"
And her daddy has told her to go
But her friend is nowhere to be seen
Now she walks through her sunken dream
To the seat with the clearest view
And she's hooked to the silver screen
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause she's lived it ten times or more
She could spit in the eyes of fools
As they ask her to focus on

I’m addicted to my Google Reader. It brings everything I could ever need right to my doorstep and helps me stay informed and up to date. I take pride in the amplitude of my reader and how well stocked I keep it. From time to time I’d like to tell you about the latest subscriptions that have made the grade and the people behind them.

Why statistics make everything better

I love my Subaru Outback, mainly because I can take it anywhere, put anything in it or on it and it runs like a charm. Something else I love about it is the digital dashboard display. This display tells me things like, how long my drive time is, my avg. MPG’s and how hot it is outside. Each day on my commute home I try and shave minutes off my drive time or I take different ways home to see if that changes the avg. MPG and the display lets me measure all of this. It’s really entertaining and adds big value to my driving experience. The cool thing is, that this idea can be applied anywhere. For instance the Nike+ product is a great way to combine product and statistics. When applied to a website, especially one that has members who are working towards a goal the idea gets very interesting. Even if the task isn’t epic in nature, the more statistics you can give to a user relating to the task, the more enjoyment the user will get. What I'm saying is why not share all those metrics you capture for your clients with your members? You all ready have the information, so why not give your users some bonus value? They will appreciate this. This also means the user will spend more time on the site, talk to more people about it, tell their friends to join, tweet/blog about it… and well you get the point.

Social Media is the WOM Marketer's dream girl

If you Twitter search WOM and Social Media together, you find a plethora of bad information, with the occasional buried nugget. So why is there so much confusion around what WOM is and what social media is? Because the two are often synonymous, they are however fundamentally different.
